KARACHI: Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) hosted a joint event to celebrate World Sleep Day and International Women’s Day, focusing on the critical role of sleep in maintaining good health and addressing the challenges women face in Pakistan. The event brought together experts, faculty members, and policymakers who discussed these pressing issues and raised awareness for meaningful change.
Experts highlighted that female literacy in Pakistan has reached 51%, compared to 72% for males, underscoring the need for greater efforts to ensure equal access to education for women. Women’s representation in the National Assembly remains limited, with only 20% of seats held by women, further pointing to systemic barriers that hinder their participation in decision-making processes.
Vice Chancellor, Professor Amjad Siraj Memon, delivered a powerful message emphasizing the importance of providing women with education, healthcare, and equal rights. Dr. Nighat Shah, Head of Ward 9B at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), shed light on the health challenges women in rural areas face, particularly the adverse effects of frequent pregnancies on both maternal and child health.
The event also emphasized the importance of sleep as a fundamental component of overall well-being. Distinguished Professor Dr. Iqbal Afridi underscored that sleep is as crucial as nutrition and exercise in maintaining physical and mental health. He discussed the detrimental effects of sleep deprivation, including impaired cognitive function and increased risk of chronic diseases, urging individuals to prioritize better sleep habits.
Dr. Azam Khan, Registrar of JSMU, distributed certificates to participants. The event was also attended by Professor Tipu Sultan, Professor Raza Shah, and other senior faculty members. Senator Bushra Anjum Butt shared her thoughts on women’s empowerment and the importance of sleep through a video message.
The event highlighted the interconnectedness of gender equality and health, marking a significant step toward creating a society where every individual, regardless of gender, can thrive.
