KARACHI: Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) marked a significant milestone as Sindh Health Minister and Pro-Chancellor Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho inaugurated the newly renovated Outpatient Departments at the university's Sindh Institute of Health Sciences.
The upgraded facility now offers patients enhanced comfort and efficiency through six fully air-conditioned OPDs and twenty state-of-the-art dental chairs, increasing daily patient capacity to over 200.
During the 7th Senate Meeting following the inauguration, Dr. Pechuho announced two key initiatives that will strengthen JSMU's role in public health. Medical students will also participate in Polio Emergency Operations to support vital immunization campaigns, while plans are underway to establish a Research Center to drive healthcare innovation.
She also inquired about the progress regarding the genomic lab and presented the idea of starting a programme in Molecular Genomic Studies.
Vice Chancellor Professor Amjad Siraj Memon thanked Dr. Azra for the idea and shared his initial plan to launch Molecular Genomic Studies, an innovative discipline set to transform medical research.
Dr. Memon also reported strong financial performance of JSMU, with 2024 revenue reaching Rs. 1,836 million and the Student Financial Aid Fund growing to Rs. 51 million to support deserving students.
Senate also heard that JSMU continues to expand its healthcare services with new facilities including a Dental Clinic at KPC and Preventive Cardiology Service at its existing IMT Campus in Landhi.
The university is also developing plans for a Boys Medical College on National Highway to further enhance medical education capacity in the region.
Academic advancements include the recent HEC approval of five PhD and five MPhil programs in Pharmacy, along with the recruitment of more than 100 clinical faculty members for JPMC.
The Senate approved a comprehensive promotion policy for contractual employees, which shall be forwarded for final approval.
