NICVD and SICVD host first annual symposium on advances in cardiovascular care

Karachi: The National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) and the Sindh Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (SICVD) launched their 1st Annual Symposium on Advances in Cardiovascular Care, a two-day event held at local hotel of Karachi, with an aim to explore cutting-edge advancements and key challenges in cardiovascular healthcare.

The inaugural ceremony, graced by Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho (Health Minister & Population Welfare Department, Sindh), as the chief guest, witnessed enthusiastic participation from healthcare professionals, researchers, and policymakers. 

The ceremony was led by Prof. Tahir Saghir, Executive Director of NICVD, and Prof. Jawaid Akbar Sial, Executive Director of SICVD, who extended their gratitude to the Sindh Government for its unwavering support in revolutionizing cardiac care.

In her speech, Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho commended NICVD and SICVD for their relentless efforts to advance cardiovascular healthcare in Pakistan and for organizing this groundbreaking symposium. She highlighted the Sindh Government's commitment to supporting initiatives that ensure accessible, world-class medical care for all citizens.

To mark the occasion, shields and souvenirs were exchanged, with Health Minister, Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho presenting awards to Prof. Tahir Saghir and Prof. Jawaid Akbar Sial for their outstanding contributions, and receiving mementos from them in return.

Before the inaugural ceremony, the symposium commenced with a special session on Environment and Cardiovascular Health, highlighting the profound connection between environmental factors and cardiovascular well-being. This critical session featured leading experts who shared invaluable insights into the intersection of pollution and public health, shedding light on how environmental hazards contribute to the growing burden of cardiovascular diseases. We were honored to have Barrister Murtaza Wahab (Mayor Karachi) participated as the chief guest for this session, where he emphasized the importance of addressing environmental challenges to safeguard public health and ensure a healthier future for our communities.

Barrister Murtaza Wahab, underlined the need for collective responsibility in building a sustainable and health-conscious urban environment, urging citizens to actively participate in creating a cleaner city.

Prof. Khawar Kazmi, Head of Preventive Cardiology, NICVD, delivered the opening remarks, emphasizing the importance of addressing environmental risks in cardiovascular care.

Dr. Zafar Fatimi from Aga Khan University discussed the Interaction of Air Pollution and Cardiovascular Health, shedding light on the harmful effects of fine particulate matter and toxic air pollutants.

Dr. Romaina Iqbal from Aga Khan University highlighted the pressing issue of Household Pollution and its significant impact on health outcomes.

Mr. Shahid Abdullah, a renowned architect and town planner, spoke about creating a Health-Friendly City, advocating for sustainable urban planning.

Comments were delivered by Prof. Jawaid Akbar Sial and Prof. Tahir Saghir, who emphasized the need for collaborative action to address environmental challenges affecting public health.

A video message by Senator Sherry Rehman, reinforced the urgent need for cleaner energy policies and stricter air quality regulations.

Symposium Highlights

The symposium features a packed agenda with sessions on advanced cardiac interventions, preventive cardiology, electrophysiology, and strategies to improve outcomes in cardiac care. 

Experts from Pakistan and abroad have come together to share knowledge and foster collaborations that will further enhance NICVD and SICVD’s mission to provide free, state-of-the-art cardiac services.

With a vision of creating a healthier Pakistan, the 1st Annual Symposium on Advances in Cardiovascular Care is set to become a landmark event, driving innovation, research, and collaboration in the field of cardiology.
