KARACHI: Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) expresses its deepest sorrow and grief over the recent tragic accident in which a dumper truck claimed the lives of innocent citizens. This devastating incident, captured on video and widely circulated, serves as a stark reminder of the alarming frequency of such accidents in the city.
The PMA notes with grave concern that such incidents have become a routine occurrence, resulting in the needless loss of lives. The apparent lack of effective measures to prevent these tragedies is deeply troubling.
In a statement, Dr. Abdul Ghafoor Shoro, Secretary General, Pakistan Medical Association (Centre) said that PMA believes that the primary cause of these accidents is the blatant disregard for traffic laws and regulations, particularly by drivers of heavy vehicles. The absence of strict enforcement by the traffic police further exacerbates the situation. Instead of focusing on implementing traffic laws, the traffic police are often perceived to be more interested in extorting money from citizens.
The PMA strongly condemns this negligence and calls upon the relevant authorities to take immediate and decisive action to prevent further loss of life.
PMA demands:
Strict enforcement of traffic laws: The traffic police must ensure that all vehicles, especially heavy vehicles, adhere to traffic rules and regulations. Overloading, speeding, and reckless driving must be dealt with the full force of the law.
Increased vigilance: The traffic police must increase their presence on the roads and monitor the behavior of drivers, especially those of heavy vehicles.
Public awareness campaigns: The government should launch public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about traffic rules and safety measures.
Accountability: The traffic police must be held accountable for their failure to enforce traffic laws.
The PMA believes that these measures are essential to ensure the safety of citizens on the roads.
The association urges the government and the relevant authorities to take immediate action to prevent further tragedies.
