Temporal Bone Dissection Skill Laboratory inaugurated at Dow Medical College

KARACHI: The Temporal Bone Dissection Skill Laboratory has been inaugurated at Dow Medical College. This laboratory is the first largest facility for cadaveric temporal bone dissection in the public sector university.This setting is being considered a significant milestone for the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head, and Neck Surgery. 

The ceremony was graced by esteemed guests, including, Chief guest, Prof. Tariq Rafi, Chairman, HEC Sindh, Guest of Honor, Prof. Mohammad Saeed Quraishy, Vice Chancellor, Dow University of Health Sciences,Prof. Nazli Hossain, Pro Vice Chancellor, DUHS, Prof. Saba Sohail, Principal, Dow Medical College, Dr. Shadaba Ahmed, esteemed foreign faculty from UK, dedicated faculty members and postgraduate trainees of the department.

Addressing the ceremony  Chairman, HEC Sindh Prof. Tariq Rafi said that temporal bone dissection is a cornerstone of otolaryngology training, demanding intricate anatomical knowledge and refined surgical dexterity. 

He said that in Pakistan, this discipline has witnessed remarkable growth since the early 2000s. He further said a surge in advanced training programs, workshops, and conferences has significantly elevated the expertise of Pakistani otolaryngologists.

On this occasion, Dow University's Vice Chancellor, Professor Mohammad Saeed Quraishy, stated that the establishment of the skill laboratory provides a dedicated space for residents to hone their surgical skills, with the intention to increase, improve and strengthen the stations and laboratory with advance equipment and better facilities. 

He praised the efforts of the Chairperson of the ENT-Dow University of Health Sciences Professor Zeba Ahmed, and her team in establishing the skill lab, considering their contributions valuable. The laboratory boasts seven stations, five of which are fully equipped with operating microscopes. This comprehensive resource aims to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, ensuring that trainees acquire the necessary surgical proficiency. By cultivating a cadre of master trainers, the lab strives to elevate the standard of otolaryngological care and ultimately improve patient outcomes. 

The objectives of this skill lab include developing hands-on skills in temporal bone dissection and surgery, enhancing understanding of temporal bone anatomy and its relationships, improved familiarity with surgical instruments and equipment, understanding of basic dissection techniques and developing the ability to identify and preserve vital structures.
